Old-Fashioned Dirty Rice (Printer-Friendly)

Savory Southern rice with seasoned beef, bell pepper, and spices for a flavorful meal or side dish.

# What You'll Need:

→ Rice and Liquids

01 - 1 cup long grain rice
02 - 2 cups beef broth
03 - 1/4 cup water

→ Meats

04 - 250 grams lean ground beef
05 - Optional: 150 grams chicken gizzards, finely chopped

→ Vegetables and Aromatics

06 - 1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
07 - 1/2 cup sweet onion, finely chopped
08 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
09 - 2 tablespoons chopped green onion (scallions), for garnish

→ Seasonings

10 - 2 teaspoons creole seasoning
11 - 1 teaspoon celery seed
12 - 1 teaspoon onion powder
13 - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
14 - 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

→ Oils

15 - 2 tablespoons canola oil

# Steps to Follow:

01 - Rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Combine rinsed rice with beef broth in a pot, bring to a boil, then cover and simmer over low heat for 20 minutes until tender.
02 - Heat canola oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, chicken gizzards if using, green bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Sauté for 8 to 10 minutes until meat is cooked through and vegetables are softened.
03 - Add the cooked rice to the skillet along with celery seed, creole seasoning, onion powder, cayenne pepper, ground black pepper, and water. Stir thoroughly and cook for 3 to 5 minutes to blend flavors and heat through.
04 - Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions. Serve immediately for best flavor.

# Extra Suggestions:

01 - Rinsing the rice removes starch, preventing a gummy texture for fluffy cooked rice.
02 - Chicken gizzards are optional but add authentic flavor traditionally found in Cajun cuisine.
03 - Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
